This Hamilton Marriage Proposal Will Warm Your Theater-Geek Heart

Stories of creative marriage proposals come in all shapes and sizes, from moonlit walks in Central Park to stadium-filled flash mobs. But this one might top them all. In planning to propose to his girlfriend, a student at Western Kentucky University named Elijah Essa looked to a passion the two shared for a certain American musical.

Essa decided to take the stage with a group of friends to sing from a Broadway juggernaut and cap it off with a proposal.

"My fiancée, Sarah Burnett, and I are huge fans of Hamilton, and I knew she would freak out if I incorporated it into the proposal," Essa told Broadway.com.

He gathered friends, led by a dancer named Connor Brown, who taught choreography to more than 20 of Elijah and Sarah's friends. On February 13 with more than 200 friends and family watching, Essa made his mark on the university's Van Meter Hall, which for that night was the room where it happens.

"I honestly can't thank everyone who was involved enough—the dancers, production team, and especially Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of Hamilton," Essa continued. "The goal is for him to see this and realize that his music inspires so many people, and that inspiration can take so many different forms—even a wedding proposal!"
